President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said his promise to restore the nursing training allowance was not for political vote, but a relevant incentive to cushion nurses in their training.

The promise to restore the allowance was a key campaign promise of the government ahead of the 2016 general elections.

According to Mr Akufo-Addo, government will cough GHS232 million this academic year to pay the allowance of about 58, 000 health trainees, comprising nurses and midwives.

Each trainee will be paid a monthly allowance of GHS400 each during the 2017/2018 academic year.

Nana Akufo-Addo said these at the launch of the restoration of the allowance, which was cancelled by the erstwhile John Mahama-led National Democratic Congress (NDC).

“Today is a happy day for the people of Ghana. The restoration of this allowance was of utmost importance. It was not meant for political vote. We think it was necessary to provide the relevant incentive to make it possible,” he stated.

Nana Akufo-Addo noted that the cancellation of the allowance “brought untold hardships to 1000s of midwives and nurses,” adding that “many of your colleagues were demotivated and demoralised. The NPP government heard your cry and promised to restore the allowances. I’m ready to fulfil the pledge we made to you”.

He expressed confidence the restoration of the allowance has come to stay.
