Member of Parliament (MP) for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has charged government to ensure that owners of filing stations are held liable for any damage associated with explosions or accidents.

He argues that such a move will compel the owners to comply with safety measures to avert any disasters.

“I have said, and I know that fuel and gas station owners will not be happy with me…I think that we should start holding them accountable. In the US, the reason why the owner of a gas station will be extra careful is because he knows that if there is any damage cost to a third party as a result of any accident as his station, his insurers and himself will be held liable because people will sue,” he explained during a discussion on Class FM’s Executive Breakfast Show on Thursday, October 12.

He told Moro Awudu that the person who brought the dangerous fuel product to the property “must exercise heightened level of care so that the danger does not escape from your premises and cause damage to third parties”.

Seven people lost their lives and some other 132 individuals sustained various degrees of injuries.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) is yet to issue an official report on the cause of the explosion.
