The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced that any increase in the prices of fuel will cause them to increase transport fares across the country.

General Secretary of GPRTU, Issah Khalifah said their members will not tolerate any further price hikes because their cost of operations are high, warning that if government does not intervene, they will be left with no choice than to increase fares.

“If fuel prices go up again, we may be forced to increase our fares,” he noted on Tuesday, 14 November.

Ahead of the 2018 budget presentation on Wednesday, 14 November, the GPRTU has requested that government scrap at least 90 per cent of the taxes on petroleum products to help push down the cost of fuel in the country.

According to them, high petroleum prices remain a major challenge for transport operators as it swallows their profit and threatens their operations.

Some drivers planned a demonstration a few weeks ago in connection with the matter but were stopped by the police and are planning another demonstration in November.
