Members of the Concerned Drivers Union are set to go on a demonstration today, Wednesday, 6 December 2017 in protest against what they say are rampant increases in the price of petroleum products in the country.

Fuel prices have seen increases since early this year without commensurate increases in transport fares, a situation the commercial road transport operators describe as unfair.

A planned demonstration by the group last month was scuttled by the police after the drivers insisted on using their vehicles in a procession.

Spokesperson for the drivers, David Agboado, speaking to Class News said they can no longer afford to buy fuel for their business.

“We want to demonstrate about the fuel increase and then the tow levy but the main issue is the rampant fuel increases these days. The reason why we want to hit the streets is that now we cannot afford to buy the fuel.

“We are now running our transport business as charity because we buy the fuel at high cost and then we dash it out to the passengers. Formerly, we were buying the fuel at GHS14,30 and now the fuel is GHS20,20 and we cannot afford it that’s why we want to demonstrate… we have engaged government several times [but to no avail].”
