The Akufo-Addo administration has so far sole-sourced 232 contracts in just one-and-a-half years in office as against the 597 the John Mahama administration sole-sourced in 2016, alone, Kwaku Kwarteng, a Deputy Minister of Finance, has said.

He told Parliament on Wednesday, 13 June that 56% of all the sole-sourced contracts the current government awarded was approved in 2017, against the 95% approved in 2016 by the Mahama government.

Mr Kwarteng was responding to questions posed by Member of Parliament for Bole Bamboi, Yusif Sulemana.

“In respect of sole-sourcing, a total of 420 applications were received in 2017, of which 232 were approved, representing 56.19%. This again is significant improvement of 2016 sole-sourced applications of 622 of which 597 representing 95. 80 were approved.

“Given that the desired default procurement method is competitive tendering, the improvement in the choice of procurement method, away from sole-sourcing under this NPP government, is good for the public purse.”

He further explained that this government intends moving away from sole-sourcing most of government’s contracts as a way of protecting the national purse.
