Unidentified gunmen at Bimbilla in the Northern Region on Thursday night in a sporadic shooting killed three and injured at least seven people in what is widely suspected to be renewed chieftaincy dispute.

Police confirmed the three were pronounced dead on arrival at the Bimbilla Hospital and seven were transferred to the Tamale Teaching Hospital for treatment.

The dead have been identified as Fusheini Issahaku, 35, Abdul Bassist Osman, 28 and Salifu Razak, 35.

It is unclear what ignited this latest violence.

Two families – Nakpa Naa and Naa Salifu Dawuni factions – have been fighting over the Bimbilla skin.

Meanwhile, calm has returned to the area with increased police and military patrols.
