Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, has observed that the absence of boards of some state institutions is hampering the work of those organisations.

He has, therefore, tasked President Nana Addo Dakwa Akufo-Addo to inaugurate the boards of all such agencies to enable them carry out the functions effectively.

Contributing to a statement on the floor of Parliament after the MP for Abirem, John Osei Frimpong, has said it was about time the government embarked on auditing of all mining firms and their activities following threats by Goldfields to lay off some workers, on Tuesday March 13, Mr Iddrisu said: “The maker of the statement raises a significant issue and I believe that it is only appropriate that we take this opportunity to call on the president of the Republic.

“Subsequent to the presentation of budget statement, we had some retreat of a workshop. There are still many boards, councils and governing councils that have not been inaugurated by the president. I think that that is affecting governance generally in the country and the president must take urgent step to get those boards, councils and institutions properly constituted and inaugurated including the Minerals Development Fund which is provided for in the ACT 912.

“It is not for you to say it is work in progress, governance must begin at the level of the board, councils and institutions. The recruitment function is the function of the board, and, so, how do we expect those institutions to function without that significant governance structure.

“So, I will call on the president that he should not just constitute the Minerals Development Fund but all other councils, boards and commissions which have not been done in accordance with law. Per Article 70 of the constitution, the mandate is vested in the hands of the president and he must be seen to be making many of the institutions functional.”
