Lawyer for some of the 14 persons standing trial over the death of Major Maxwell Mahama claims the team that was led by Major Mahama were protecting illegal miners.

According to Mr Bernard Shaw, Major Mahama and a team of 30 other soldiers were protecting Canada and Ghana Mining Company (C&G), a company that had been asked to stop operations by the Minerals Commission.

The lawyer added hat as at January 30, 2017, the Minerals Commission had written to C&G to cease operations.

Mr Shaw made the claims during the cross examination of WO2 Kwesi Sabi, Major Mahama’s second in the operation meant to protect C&G.

The cross examination of WO2 Sabi will continue on June 5, 2018.

Major Mahama was killed on May 29, 2017 at Denkyira Obuasi in the Central Region.

Fourteen people including William Baah, a former assembly man of Denkyira Obuasi, are standing trial for his death.
