Former President John Dramani Mahama has urged African leaders to accord visa-free or visa-on-arrival opportunities for all Africans arriving in their countries.

Mr Mahama said the rest of Africa must learn from Ghana, Kenya and Rwanda in that regard.

In a Facebook post to commemorate African Union Day on Friday, 25 May 2018, Mr Mahama said the move will “boost trade and grow our economies and open up our markets.”

Below is the full post:

Today is African Union Day, and I wish to use this occasion to celebrate the strides we continue to make as a continent and people.

Africa indeed is Rising!

Let me congratulate my country, Ghana, and Kenya for depositing the instruments for the ratification of the Continental Free Trade Area Agreement, and welcome the announcement that Rwanda will also be doing same soon.

As a former Chair of the AU’s High Level Panel on Free Trade, this makes me very proud of my country and the continent, and I do hope that Nigeria and South Africa are beginning to appreciate why they must, as the two leading economies on the continent, join in this effort.

Let me also encourage our other African countries to join Ghana’s effort in 2016, followed by Rwanda and later Kenya, and allow for a visa-free, or visa-on-arrival opportunities for all Africans arriving in our countries.

It will further boost trade and grow our economies and open up our markets.
