Former Chairperson of the Convention People's Party (CPP), Samia Yaba Nkrumah, has charged African leaders to take action on uniting Africa immediately.

The daughter of Ghana’s first president is wondering why African states have not formed an alliance under one umbrella with a common economic and political goal.

“For how long do we have to wait before revisiting the original vision of African unity, that is, a continent united politically and economically?” she queried.

In a post on her Facebook Wall on 25 May 2018 to commemorate AU DAY, Ms. Nkrumah said: “The whole world has a vested interest in African unity and prosperity. With wealthier people, higher purchasing power, and bigger markets, Africa will be a more reliable partner to investors, local and international, and a stronger defender of peace in the world”.

She explained that an African unity “does not imply a loss of sovereignty as independent states” but “only confirms agreement on three important objectives” which relate to “economic planning on a continental scale, common defence strategy and a unified foreign policy”.

She bemoaned ineffective attempts toward uniting Africa which have omitted political unity.

“If we want to be honest with ourselves, we would have to admit that past efforts at integration that have excluded political unity such as regional associations and economic agreements have not transformed the life of the average African for the better,” she noted.
