A suspected armed robber, Nathaniel Ibu, a Nigerian, who was trying to escape in a car, collided with a Range Rover at the Okponglo traffic light in Accra and died whilst being rushed to the Police Hospital for treatment.

At about 10am on Thursday, 24 May 2018, personnel of the Police Intelligence Directorate, acted on information that some of the armed robbers who took part in the Bogosu robbery that led to the murder of Police Lance Corporal Nicholas Doku, were planning to embark on another robbery at East Legon.

Undercover personnel from the Directorate monitored and arrested one suspect, Kojo Amponsah, 46, at Ablekuma Olebu, in Accra.

The suspect immediately confessed to taking part in the Bogosu robbery and led the team to Achimota to apprehend his accomplices.

At Achimota Bus Terminal, one of his accomplices, upon seeing the team, sped off towards the motorway facing on-coming vehicles, whilst firing at the police who pursued him and returned fire.

Luck eluded Ibu who got involved in an accident at Okponglo traffic light and died, as police made attempts to send him to the Hospital.

One foreign pistol with forty rounds of ammunition was retrieved from Ibu’s vehicle.

Suspect Amponsah further explained to the police that Ibu led the gang from Accra to Bogosu to rob and kill the lance corporal.
