The Black Stars have arrived home from Mauritius where they sealed a qualification to the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations finals.
Coach Avram Grant’s team recorded a 2-0 win over Mauritius to cement their position as Group H leaders going into the final round of the qualifier in September against Rwanda.
Speaking to journalists on arrival, Avram Grant said they are hoping for better preparation ahead of the competition next year.
“We were in the final last time, we lost only in penalties. It was a better team, our target is to do the best that we can in this tournament and we have six months, so, let’s wait and see, but we need the right preparation because it is very important. We did it well the last time and we want to do it better this time. We have the quality, other teams also have the quality but we are thinking about ourselves”, he stated.
Vice president of the Ghana Football Association and Black Stars Committee Chairman George Afriyie, speaking to Class Sports said the goal of the team is to win the competition next year.
“The dream is to make sure we win the next AFCON and, so, I don’t think we can set any realistic target apart from telling the coach to go and win the cup. That is the target, but first of all, we need to prepare well for us to win any trophy. Ones we plan and stick to the plan, it is possible we can win”.
He is confident the current crop of players can do the job in Gabon. “If you look at what we were able to do last year in 2015, I don’t see any significant change. The team is almost intact, we still have about 98 per cent of the team intact and, so, I don’t see anything different from what we were able to do the last time, we just need luck to push it a bit further”.
