CMC secures major victory for Ghana at Global Cocoa Freight Talks

The Cocoa Marketing Company (CMC) has secured a major win for Ghana at the annual cocoa freight negotiation conference in Rouen, France, where industry leaders and shipping stakeholders gathered to deliberate on key issues affecting the global cocoa trade.
Leading the Ghanaian delegation, CMC Managing Director, Wisdom Kofi Dogbey, delivered a powerful keynote address, urging stronger collaboration between shipping lines and CMC to build a resilient and sustainable cocoa supply chain.
“We must work together to create a framework that supports our farmers and ensures the continued success of Ghana’s cocoa industry,” Dr. Dogbey emphasised.
He appealed to shipping lines to increase calls at Takoradi Port, adopt advanced technologies, and guarantee a steady supply of food-grade containers for transporting Ghana’s cocoa.
The negotiations were bolstered by close collaboration between CMC and the Ghana Shippers Authority, which jointly defended Ghana’s position and advocated for the interests of CMC, Cocobod, and the nation.
One of the highlights of the conference was Dr. Dogbey’s call for greater investment in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) by shipping lines.
He stressed that supporting local communities would help create a more equitable cocoa industry and improve the livelihoods of farmers.
A decisive moment came when CMC successfully resisted attempts by some shipping lines to increase freight rates.
The final agreement to maintain current rates was hailed as a significant victory for Ghana, as it helps reduce operational costs and keeps Ghanaian cocoa competitive in the global market.
The outcome reflects the strong relationships CMC has built within the industry and its commitment to protecting Ghana’s economic interests.
While in France, Dr. Dogbey also visited the factory of a leading chocolate manufacturer that sources cocoa from Ghana.
The tour reinforced the value of Ghana’s premium beans and highlighted the direct link between Ghanaian farmers and international buyers.
Closing the conference, Dr. Dogbey thanked industry partners for their cooperation and reaffirmed CMC’s commitment to sustainable practices and stronger partnerships.
