Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o has revealed that a uterine fibroid condition first diagnosed more than a decade ago has returned in a more serious form, prompting her to speak out about the need for improved care and research.

During an appearance on the Today, the actress disclosed that doctors recently found more than 50 fibroids, with the largest about the size of an orange. She said physicians presented her with two difficult options: undergo another invasive surgery or continue living with persistent pain and discomfort.

Nyong’o previously had 23 fibroids removed in 2014 through a myomectomy, a uterus-preserving procedure. She described the prospect of another operation as daunting and said she is not yet ready to take that step due to the risks and recovery involved.

Beyond sharing her personal health challenges, the actress has turned her focus to advocacy. She is raising funds to support research into less invasive and non-invasive treatments and partnering with organizations that promote uterine health awareness.

Medical professionals note that fibroids are common and can lead to heavy bleeding, prolonged periods and pelvic pain, with treatment decisions often influenced by symptoms and fertility goals.

Nyong’o says speaking publicly has helped break the stigma around the condition and connect her with others facing similar struggles. She is now urging more open conversations and stronger scientific investment to ensure safer, more effective treatment options for women worldwide.
