Ato Forson: Ghana’s economy back on track as IMF programme nears completion
Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has declared that Ghana’s economy has returned to a path of stability, citing stronger fiscal management, renewed investor confidence and reforms aimed at sustaining long-term growth.
Presenting the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament on Thursday, July 23, the Minister said recent economic improvements are beginning to ease pressure on businesses and households through declining inflation, lower interest rates and improved purchasing power.
He maintained that the positive trends reflect prudent economic management rather than temporary gains while acknowledging that many Ghanaians continue to face the effects of the country’s recent economic challenges.
Despite those difficulties, Dr Forson said government has laid a solid foundation for sustained economic recovery with fiscal discipline restored and macroeconomic conditions improving under the administration of President John Dramani Mahama.
The Finance Minister also announced that the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is expected to approve the final review of Ghana’s Extended Credit Facility (ECF), marking the successful completion of the programme.
According to him, the IMF is also set to endorse a new 36-month Policy Coordination Instrument (PCI) which will support Ghana’s reform agenda without providing additional financial assistance.
He explained that the PCI will focus on maintaining fiscal discipline, ensuring debt sustainability, improving transparency, strengthening monetary and exchange rate policies, safeguarding financial sector stability and promoting economic diversification.
Dr Forson expressed confidence that successful implementation of the new programme would enhance Ghana’s credibility, improve access to concessional financing and strengthen the country’s prospects of attaining investment-grade status.
