The Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly has rolled out a comprehensive, people-centred development programme aimed at improving education, access to potable water, road safety and community infrastructure across the municipality.

Launching the first phase of the projects at a sod-cutting ceremony, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Dr. Michael Mensah, said the initiative reflects the Assembly’s firm commitment to inclusive development, equity and improved living standards for residents.

According to him, the projects span critical sectors of daily life and include the construction of a six-unit classroom block at Bawaleshie and an 18-unit classroom block at Dzorwulu, the installation of five speed humps to enhance road safety, the construction of a storm drainage system to curb flooding, pavement and landscaping works, as well as the construction and mechanisation of 13 boreholes across all electoral areas.

“These interventions cut across education, water, sanitation, road safety and community infrastructure, which are key pillars of sustainable development,” Dr. Mensah stated.

He disclosed that the projects are fully funded by the government through the District Assembly Common Fund, describing this as a clear demonstration of the state’s commitment to decentralisation and grassroots development.

Dr. Mensah emphasised that education remains central to national development, noting that the new classroom blocks will ease congestion in schools, improve teaching and learning conditions, and provide a more conducive environment for pupils.

“The classroom blocks will reduce congestion, improve teaching and learning conditions, and create a better learning environment for our children, who are the future leaders of this nation,” he said.

On road safety, the MCE explained that the construction of speed humps is intended to protect lives, especially those of schoolchildren and pedestrians.

He added that the drainage, sanitation and pavement works will help address flooding challenges, improve hygiene and enhance the general outlook of communities.

Touching on water access, Dr. Mensah said the borehole projects will promote equity and dignity by ensuring reliable access to potable water in all 13 electoral areas.

“The provision of boreholes will ensure equitable access to safe drinking water, promote good health and uphold the dignity of our people,” he noted.

The MCE described the programme as a clear signal of his administration’s resolve to deliver inclusive, people-focused development while ensuring value for money, transparency and accountability in the use of public funds.

He assured residents that the Assembly will work closely with contractors, consultants and community leaders to ensure quality work and timely completion of the projects.

He also appealed to contractors to execute the works professionally and urged community members to protect the facilities, stressing that they are assets not only for the present generation but for posterity.

Dr. Mensah expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama, the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, and other stakeholders for their support, describing the initiative as a major step toward sustainable and equitable development in the Ayawaso West Municipality.
