The Spokesperson for the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, Mr. Richard Rockson, has attributed Ghana’s recent stable power supply to a series of decisive policy and operational reforms spearheaded by the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Mr. John Abdulai Jinapor.

Speaking in an interview on Accra-based Neat FM on Thursday, Mr. Rockson said the Ministry’s reform agenda has focused on ensuring efficiency, transparency, and value for money within the power sector.

According to him, two new transformers have already been procured to address localised power outages across the country, while significant progress has been made in restructuring Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) to ensure greater efficiency and competitiveness.

“All PPAs are now being awarded through competitive tendering as required by Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 258.

The Ministry has successfully renegotiated several existing PPAs, leading to savings of over $300 million,” Mr. Rockson stated.

He added that reforms in the procurement of liquid fuels have also contributed to improved power generation reliability, helping to maintain the current stability in electricity supply.

Mr. Rockson commended President John Dramani Mahama for his unwavering commitment to sustaining the Cash Waterfall Mechanism, which ensures that financial flows within the power sector are transparent and properly managed.

He further revealed that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has undergone major operational reforms, resulting in a sharp reduction in expenditure.

“Last year, ECG spent about GHS 9 billion, but this year, that figure has been reduced to GHS 2 billion, allowing the company to focus its spending on essential operational needs such as maintenance and material procurement,” he disclosed.

Mr. Rockson emphasised that these achievements reflect the Energy Minister’s dedication to building a sustainable, efficient, and reliable energy sector capable of supporting Ghana’s 24-hour economy agenda.
