Former Chief Executive Officer of the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO), Hanan Abdul-Wahab Aludiba, has been released by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after several days in custody.

Sources familiar with the matter said Mr Abdul-Wahab was released on Wednesday evening without any conditions attached.

His release comes days after EOCO re-arrested him at the Accra International Airport on July 4, as he prepared to travel to the United Kingdom. Investigators alleged that he attempted to gain access to a frozen account at Republic Bank through fraudulent means before his departure.

The arrest sparked renewed legal exchanges between the Attorney-General's Office and Mr Abdul-Wahab's legal team, with both sides disputing the legality of the detention.

Deputy Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr Justice Srem-Sai, had earlier indicated that the state intended to return to the High Court to seek a review of the order that permitted the former NAFCO boss to travel.

Mr Abdul-Wahab remains under investigation over alleged financial irregularities linked to his tenure at NAFCO. He and his wife, Faiza Seidu Wuni, were previously charged alongside other individuals over alleged financial offences involving the state-owned company.

Those charges were later withdrawn by the Attorney-General's Office after prosecutors said new evidence had emerged, leading to their discharge by the court.

Despite that decision, EOCO subsequently re-arrested Mr Abdul-Wahab and his wife, a move that has generated debate over the legal basis of the action.

The former NAFCO Chief Executive has consistently denied any wrongdoing, while his lawyers continue to challenge the state's handling of the case.

EOCO, however, has maintained that its actions were lawful and carried out in accordance with due process.

Meanwhile, former Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame, who is representing Mr Abdul-Wahab, has rejected claims by the Attorney-General's Office, insisting his client committed no offence. He further argued that no application had been filed before the High Court to review the travel order prior to the arrest, contrary to the state's assertions.
