The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has debunked speculations that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno is deceased, noting the IGP was alive and attending to his responsibilities in good health.  

"We wish to categorically state that these reports are false," police said on their verified Facebook page, Sunday, November 30, 2025.

"The IGP is alive and well and going about his duties as expected," the statement emphasised.  

The service urged its "officers, family members, loved ones, and the general public to disregard these reports".

In conclusion, police warned "persons behind these malicious, insensitive, and reckless claims to note that disinformation constitutes an offense and perpetrators will be brought to justice when identified".

President Mahama recently approved a two-year contract extension for Mr Yohuno's tenure as IGP, despite being of retirement age in December this year.

The re-engagement takes effect from December 28, 2025. 

“The president’s decision reflects the council’s firm conviction that your continued leadership is essential to sustaining ongoing reforms, strengthening operational effectiveness, and ensuring stability within the Ghana Police Service at this critical period,” 

The IGP was appointed by President John Mahama, in consultation with the Council of State, on March 13, 2025. He was sworn in on the next day, suceeding Dr George Akuffo Dampare, under whom he had served as deputy IGP (Operations).
