Kpone Katamanso to demolish 14 structures on waterways as Assembly steps up flood mitigation
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Kpone Katamanso Municipal Assembly, Samuel T. K. Morton, has disclosed that 14 structures identified as obstructing waterways in the municipality have been earmarked for demolition as part of efforts to address persistent flooding.
According to the MCE, the affected structures were identified following an assessment conducted by a national team that deployed drone technology to map flood-prone areas and assess the extent of encroachment on waterways.
Speaking to Rebecca Lartey, Mr. Morton said the recent heavy rains had a devastating impact on the municipality, destroying several structures, displacing residents, and exposing the urgent need to clear blocked drainage channels to reduce the risk of future flooding.
Mr Morton said the Assembly has begun implementing proactive measures, including the desilting of drains, to improve the free flow of water and minimise the impact of subsequent rains.
Meanwhile, he noted that the Assembly is currently awaiting a directive from President John Dramani Mahama before carrying out the demolition exercise.
He further announced that the Assembly has introduced a GH¢200 reward for individuals who report sanitation offenders. He urged residents to become "sanitation police" in their communities by helping enforce sanitation regulations and promoting a cleaner environment.
