Nhyiaeso MP announces crackdown on underage gambling, alcohol abuse and drug camps
Member of Parliament (MP) for Nhyiaeso, Stephen Amoah, has announced a series of measures aimed at tackling underage gambling, alcohol abuse, unregistered motorbikes and illegal drug camps in the constituency.
The MP outlined the measures at an event where he awarded scholarships to 300 students to pursue degree programmes at various universities. He also donated 30 streetlights to each of the nine electoral areas in the constituency and presented five desktop computers each to State Experimental Junior High School and John Agyekum Kufuor Senior High School.
As part of the new directives, Amoah said persons under the age of 18 found engaging in sports betting will be arrested. He added that operators of betting centres who allow minors onto their premises will also face arrest.
The MP further announced a ban on the purchase and consumption of alcohol by minors within the constituency. According to him, underage persons caught drinking alcohol will be detained, while parents or guardians will be held accountable, including in situations where a minor is sent to purchase alcohol on behalf of an adult.
He also directed that all unregistered motorbikes be kept off the roads in Nhyiaeso, warning that such vehicles will be impounded if found operating within the constituency.
Amoah further disclosed plans to dismantle illegal drug camps, commonly known as "weed camps," across the area.
While acknowledging the challenges faced by individuals battling addiction, he said the camps would not be allowed to operate and would be removed.
The MP said the enforcement measures are being implemented in collaboration with local chiefs and assembly members.
To support rehabilitation efforts, he announced a skills training initiative for former drug users. The programme will provide training in trades including carpentry, barbering and hairdressing to help participants acquire employable skills.
Some beneficiaries of the scholarship programme commended the MP for the initiative, describing it as beneficial to their education and future prospects.
