Ofankor domestic violence viral video: John Lamptey's wife breaks her silence, alleges amid wailing Tesano Police Station failed her
John Odartey Lamptey’s wife and mother of his two children has broken her silence, confirming police reports that she fled the scene after a video capturing her husband abusing her went viral.
She spoke to US-based Ghanaian social media personality Naana Donkor Arthur.
The unnamed woman narrated a distressing incident which she said was witnessed by her first child Kelvin, 5, alleging that her husband John accused her of infidelity, forced pepper into her intimate parts, tore her clothes and forced himself on her. She said when it was over, John slept off, while she gathered her clothes, pieces of the pepper, and went to Tesano Police Station to present these items and her bruised skin to officers at the station as evidence of the violence and abuse she was suffering at home.
She cried profusely narrating how Tesano Police Station let her down greatly. She said she was asked about her family, to which she answered she was alone in Accra. She said they invited her husband, who denied the abuse, and called his family members as witnesses. Eventually, after several visits, the police informed her to accept the situation as simply marital trials, not needing their intervention. She said they asked her to exercise patience.
She expressed deep sorrow over this, opining she was denied help because she had no family members available at the time nor money. She wondered why the police had taken note of the evidence she presented but denied her justice.
The woman, who identified as Ewe, indicated that with profound grief, she left their Ofankor residence, and went to live with a friend, who was later physically confronted by her husband. Thus, she said she went back to her family of origin in their village, supported with money from her friend. While there, she said she went into the cocoa trade.
She said her husband later reached out telling her their children were sick causing her to return to Accra - their younger, Laura, approaching 3 years. It was upon her return that she said she was subjected to another round of traumatising abuse, first in their chambers and later outside. This is what was captured on camera by a female tenant, which recently circulated on social media.
In the video, she pleaded for mercy from John whose attention seemed only fixed on humiliating and beating her. In the video, he was seen locking the gate to the compound to keep his wife from escaping his wrath. The locked gate shut out a man who appeared to have attempted to intervene, too. As his wife sat on the ground in their compound, deprived of clothing, her husband, the landlord, fetched sticks and beat her mercilessly.
When police arrived, the victim was nowhere to be found. They promptly arrested John and two others. All three have been remanded into custody, to reappear in court on December 3, 2025.
John Lamptey was charged with physical assault, contrary to Sections 1(b)(i) and 3(2) of the Domestic Violence Act, 2007 (Act 732).
Louis Odartey Lamptey and Grace Kushie Lamptey were also charged with conspiracy to commit a crime, to wit "threat of harm" contrary to Sections 23(1) and 74 of the Criminal and Other Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), since they attempted attacking a tenant, suspecting her of recording and circulating the incident.
In her video call with Naana Donkor Arthur, the woman disclosed the police did not find her because she jumped over the wall and runaway. She said she got into a bus heading to Kumasi, even though she knew no one in the Ashanti Regional Capital, and arrived in Kejetia.
"I thank God that I did not kill myself because this moment was excruciatingly difficult for me," John's wife wailed. "Who was going to help me? Who would advocate for me? Typically when you take such a matter to the police station, they discipline the man and have him sign a bond of good behaviour but mine was different; it has been continuously and now it's come to this crescendo."
She invited the authorities and the public to go to her Ofankor community where they would readily find many witnesses to her recurrent domestic abuse at the hands of John Odartey Lamptey.
