Oppong Nkrumah calls for Parliamentary probes over reserve losses and oil palm deficit
The Ranking Member on Economy and Development, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, is demanding a series of parliamentary investigations into what he describes as major financial losses and policy lapses by the government, including a reported $14 million loss linked to gold-for-reserve transactions and broader weaknesses in key sectors.
The lawmaker revealed that the Minority has filed 12 separate motions before the Parliament of Ghana seeking formal inquiries. Although listed by the Speaker, the motions have yet to be debated.
“The reason it’s important to investigate all of these things is so that we understand clearly why it happened and more importantly prescribe solutions,” he said.
Oppong Nkrumah also raised concerns about structural challenges in agriculture, particularly the oil palm industry. He noted that while Ghana consumes about 400,000 metric tonnes of palm oil annually, production stands at only 260,000 metric tonnes, creating a significant shortfall.
He cautioned that rising imports and smuggling are hurting local producers and threatening employment.
“The oil palm industry alone employs about a million people,” he said, warning that cheaper imports continue to shrink domestic output and put livelihoods at risk.
Oppong Nkrumah was speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday, February 24, 2026.
