Parliament suspends Friday sitting for MPs to join national flood cleanup
Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has announced that Parliament will not sit on Friday, July 10, 2026, to allow Members of Parliament from flood-affected constituencies to participate in the National General Cleaning Exercise.
The decision follows the government's declaration of Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, as National General Cleaning Days in seven regions affected by recent flooding.
The exercise is aimed at clearing blocked drains and waterways to help reduce the risk of further flooding.
Addressing Parliament, Speaker Bagbin said the decision was reached after consultations with the leadership of the House on Parliament's role in supporting the national cleanup campaign.
He said MPs from the affected areas would be able to provide leadership and work with residents during the exercise if they returned to their constituencies.
"Among the matters we considered was whether it would be appropriate for the House not to sit on Friday, 10th July 2026, to enable Honourable Members from the affected regions to return to their constituencies and provide direct leadership in the cleanup exercise alongside their people. Definitely, it was a unanimous yes," he said.
The Speaker added that further information on Parliament's business schedule would be communicated to Members in due course.
The National General Cleaning Exercise is expected to involve residents, local authorities and other stakeholders in cleaning drains and improving sanitation in flood-prone communities.
