The Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSGH) with "deep concern and outrage" has condemned the act of violence unleashed on a pharmacy attendant and a female client at Burma Camp, Accra.

The disturbing incident was captured via CCTV cameras local to the pharmacy from multiple angles. The footage which have gone viral showed a non-uniformed officer of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) slapping and punching the shop attendant and client multiple times.

PSGH, in their statement, identified the assailant as Warrant Officer Class One (WO1) Mensah Williams.

They also noted the pharmacy in question was called e-Pride Chemist.

PSGH said they had been to the pharmacy "to verify first-hand the reports in the media," and assured the pharmaceutical care team at the pharmacy of "our support and commitment to ensure justice for the victims".

The society "unequivocally" recognised and condemned the military man's actions as a "barbaric, reprehensible, and utterly unacceptable act of violence".

"Such conduct not only violates the fundamental human rights and dignity of the victims but also constitutes a grave affront to public trust and the sanctity of healthcare spaces," PSGH emphasised.

The society underlined the severity of the incident, noting: "Community pharmacy personnel were front-line healthcare providers who serve the public diligently - even under difficult circumstances - to ensure access to essential medicines and care. An attack on pharmacy personnel is, therefore, an attack on public health and on the safety of every Ghanaian who depends on pharmacy services for their well-being."

The PSGH expressed "its deep empathy and solidarity with the pharmacy personnel and the female client who endured this traumatic ordeal.

"We stand firmly with them and wil ensure they receive the necessary psychological and professional support."

The society implored the Ghana Police Service (GPS) and the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) "to pursue this matter to its logical conclusion, ensuring that justice is served swiftly and transparently".

The society noted they would "closely follow this case until the full weight of the law is brought to bear on" WO1 Mensah Williams.

PSGH acknowledged and commended GAF's "prompt intervention and the arrest of the suspect". They said the act "demonstrates an institutional commitment to discipline and professionalism".

"We trust that disciplinary processes, thorough investigation, and prosecution of the perpetrator in accordance with the laws of the Republic will be expedited to reinforce public confidence in the Armed Forces' zero-tolerance stance toward such misconduct," the society underlined.

In conclusion, the Dr Pharm Paul Owusu Donkor-led PSGH noted its commitment to "protecting the safety, dignity, and professional integrity of al pharmacy professionals across the country," urging all stakeholders to "work together to ensure that healthcare spaces remain zones of respect, safety, and service to humanity".
