President John Dramani Mahama has called for a new phase in Ghana’s relationship with the European Union, urging both sides to move beyond traditional aid arrangements and deepen cooperation in trade, investment, and economic development.

The President made the call during the 2026 Ghana–European Union Partnership Dialogue held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Accra.

The event brought together senior government officials, representatives of the European Union, and key stakeholders to discuss areas of mutual interest and cooperation.

Delivering the keynote address, President Mahama described the European Union as one of Ghana’s most important trade and investment partners and stressed the need for a partnership that delivers shared economic benefits.

He reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for sustainable economic growth, investment, and private sector development, noting that stronger economic cooperation would contribute significantly to the country's development agenda.

The President also outlined Ghana’s ambition to become a leading digital hub on the African continent, highlighting ongoing efforts to leverage technology and innovation to drive economic transformation.

According to him, strengthening democratic governance, promoting transparency, and upholding the rule of law remain central to Ghana’s development strategy and efforts to attract investment.

President Mahama said these pillars are essential for building investor confidence and ensuring long-term national prosperity.

Opening the dialogue, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to strengthening its longstanding relationship with the European Union.

He noted that the partnership has yielded significant benefits over the years and expressed confidence that both parties would continue to collaborate to achieve greater progress and shared prosperity.

The event was attended by several government officials, including the Minister for the Interior, who joined discussions on enhancing cooperation between Ghana and the European Union across various sectors.
