Former Tamale Mayor sues NPP activist for defamation, seeks GHS 1 million in damages

The High Court in Tamale has issued a writ of summons against New Patriotic Party (NPP) activist Mr. Yahaya Fuseini, popularly known as Agbaa, following a defamation suit filed by former Tamale Mayor, Mr. Sule Salifu.
In the statement of claim filed by his counsel, Alhaji Mohammed Shaibu Abdulai of Lugu Law Chambers, the former Mayor is seeking four main reliefs:
A declaration that statements made by the defendant were defamatory.
An order directing the defendant to issue an unqualified apology and retract the publication within three days of judgment.
A perpetual injunction restraining the defendant from making further defamatory remarks.
General damages of GHS 1 million for defamation.
The writ, issued on September 5, 2025, under suit number NR/HC/143/25, directs the defendant to enter an appearance within eight days of service or risk a default judgment.
The suit arises from an audio recording allegedly circulated on social media, in which Mr. Fuseini accused Mr. Salifu of using a trailer to cart bags of rice from government warehouses to sell to a woman in the Tamale market after the NPP’s defeat in the December 2024 elections.
The rice, originally intended for farmers affected by last year’s prolonged dry spell, was allegedly diverted for personal gain.
Mr. Salifu, who served as Mayor of Tamale during President Nana Akufo-Addo’s second term, insists the claims are false and damaging to his reputation.
The High Court will determine whether the activist’s comments constitute defamation and if the reliefs sought should be granted.
