The Government has declared Friday, January 9, 2026, as a public holiday to mark Constitution Day.

In a statement issued on January 2, 2026, the Ministry of the Interior explained that although Constitution Day officially falls on Wednesday, January 7, President John Dramani Mahama has exercised his authority under an Executive Instrument to shift the observance to Friday.

The decision, according to the Ministry, is in accordance with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, 2001 (Act 601), as amended, and is intended to allow for broader national participation in the celebration.

The statement, signed by the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak (MP), urged the general public to take note of the change and observe the holiday nationwide.

Constitution Day commemorates the coming into force of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution, which established the country’s Fourth Republic and underpins its democratic governance.
