NACOC arrests SA national in major drug bust at Kotoka International Airport
The Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has intercepted a sophisticated drug smuggling attempt at Kotoka International Airport (KIA), resulting in the arrest of a South African(SA) national and an airline official.
The South African suspect was apprehended on Monday, November 10, 2025, upon arrival on a flight from Thailand. Acting on intelligence, NACOC officers conducted a thorough search of the passenger's luggage, leading to the discovery of over 30 kilograms of cannabis.
The illicit substance was found meticulously concealed in vacuum-sealed packages hidden within the passenger's personal belongings.
In a significant twist to the operation, NACOC also arrested an airline official stationed at KIA for allegedly assisting the suspect in bypassing standard security protocols.
Preliminary investigations point to a coordinated smuggling effort involving both individuals.
The two suspects are currently in custody and assisting with the ongoing investigation.
In a strong statement, the Commission reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on drug trafficking and vowed to enhance surveillance at all entry points while strengthening collaboration with international security partners.
“Anyone found complicit in narcotic-related offences — regardless of nationality or position — will face the full rigours of the law,” NACOC affirmed.
