Police intercept Howo truck carrying suspected Indian hemp, arrest 2 in Tema operation
The Tema Regional Police Command has intercepted a tipper truck loaded with a large quantity of plant material suspected to be Indian hemp and arrested two suspects in connection with the haul.
The operation was carried out in the early hours of Sunday, June 14, 2026, at Afienya in the Greater Accra Region following intelligence received from the Volta Regional Police Command, which had reportedly tracked the vehicle from Juapong towards Tema.
According to the police, the green HOWO tipper truck with registration number GN 2287-24 was stopped and searched, leading to the discovery of 56 maxi sacks containing suspected narcotic substances. Each sack reportedly contained about 80 wrapped parcels of plant material believed to be Indian hemp.
The driver of the vehicle, identified as 26-year-old Solomon Akuaku, and his mate, 31-year-old James Tetteh, were arrested at the scene.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspected narcotics were being transported to Ada. The suspects told investigators that the alleged owner of the consignment, known only as “Red,” was travelling ahead of the truck and directing the journey.
The two suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations, while the exhibits have been retained as evidence.
Police say efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the alleged owner of the consignment.
The Ghana Police Service has reaffirmed its commitment to combating drug trafficking and related criminal activities across the country. It also called on the public to support law enforcement agencies by providing credible information that can aid in the fight against crime.
