The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has announced that the government is set to commence Phase II of the Blue Water Initiative, a flagship programme aimed at safeguarding Ghana’s water bodies from the devastating impact of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

The new phase, the Minister explained, will shift focus towards removing harmful chemicals from polluted water bodies that have been contaminated by mining-related activities.

Speaking at a sectoral briefing held at the Presidency, Mr. Armah-Kofi Buah disclosed that feasibility studies are currently underway to guide the smooth rollout of this next stage.

“We are moving from just protecting the water to actively restoring and rehabilitating it.

This is a critical move towards environmental recovery,” he noted.

As part of the government’s broader strategy, the Minister revealed that over 450 personnel, referred to as Blue Water Guards, have already been trained and deployed across the country.

He further announced that 530 more officers will graduate and join the force on Friday, July 25, bringing the total number of trained guards to 980.

“These men and women have been equipped not only with technical skills but also with the ethos of non-confrontational community engagement,” Mr. Armah-Kofi Buah stated.

“Their role is vital in the preservation of our natural water resources, which are being threatened by years of abuse.”

The Minister underscored the importance of the Blue Water Guards, describing them as the frontline defenders in Ghana’s fight to preserve its rivers and water bodies.

The Blue Water Initiative, launched in 2024, forms part of the government’s comprehensive response to the environmental and public health threats posed by illegal mining.

Phase II is expected to accelerate national efforts to restore polluted rivers and ensure safe water supply for communities across the country.
