Gov't to rebuild Bawku Naba’s statue- Defence Minister assures

The Minister for Defence, Dr Edward Omane Boamah has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to modernising the Ghana Armed Forces and improving troop welfare during an open forum held with personnel of Garrisons 1 and 5 at Burma Camp on Wednesday.
The All Ranks durbar, which provided a rare unfiltered opportunity for officers, soldiers, and civilian staff to interact with the Minister, was marked by frank discussions on professionalism, discipline, and the future of the military.
In his address, the Minister commended the troops for their bravery, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to national security.
He praised the Ghana Armed Forces for their continued role in safeguarding the peace and stability of the country.
“I applaud your dedication and discipline,” he said, “but I also urge you to deal ruthlessly with those within your ranks who compromise the honour and professionalism that define the Ghana Armed Forces.”
Touching on recent developments in Bawku, the Minister condemned the destruction of a cherished statue in the area and the shooting of two soldiers.
He assured that the government would rebuild the statue and that appropriate sanctions would be applied to the perpetrators of both acts.
The Minister also issued a stern warning against a growing trend of some soldiers clandestinely offering guard services to unauthorised individuals.
He called on the Military High Command to urgently address this illegal practice.
In a gesture aimed at reinforcing professional integrity, the Minister donated GHS10,000 to a serving soldier who rejected a bribe while deployed on an anti-galamsey operation.
The soldier, who exemplified the military’s Honour Code, has since been promoted by the Chief of Defence Staff.
Quoting the Honour Code, the Minister reminded troops:“The safety, honour, and welfare of your country come first… The honour, welfare, and comfort of the men you command come next… Your own ease, comfort, and safety come last.”
He outlined the government’s broader defence reform vision as part of a national reset agenda.
This includes:
Enhancing Operational Capacity to enable faster and more effective responses to emerging security threats,
Improving Troop Welfare through competitive benefits and better working conditions,
Forging Strategic Global Partnerships to boost military capabilities, and
Investing in Infrastructure, with a target of 10,000 new housing units, improved logistics, and modern equipment.
Troops were assured of better healthcare, supported by the Mahama Cares Initiative, as well as periodic salary reviews to ensure fairness and equity.
Training and professional development opportunities would also be expanded under the new reforms.
Concluding his address, the Minister pledged to leave behind "a modernised, expanded, and responsive military with happier troops than they have ever been."
