John Dumelo donates 500 bags of rice to UG to support food bank initiative

The Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture and Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, Mr. John Dumelo, has donated 500 bags of rice to the University of Ghana to support its food bank initiative.
The donation, made up of 5kg bags, was presented to the Dean of Students, Prof Rosina Kyeremanten, on Wednesday, 23rd July 2025.
The food bank initiative was set up by the university to support students who face financial difficulties in meeting their daily nutritional needs.
In a post on his official Facebook page, Mr Dumelo wrote: “This morning I donated 500 5kg bags of rice to the University of Ghana through the Dean of Students, Prof. Rosina Kyeremanten.
The food bank initiative was launched by UG to help financially vulnerable students who find it hard to sometimes have 3 square meals on campus.”
His gesture has received widespread praise on social media, with many commending his continued commitment to social welfare and student well-being.
Mr Dumelo, who also represents the university community in Parliament, has consistently supported student-centred interventions.
As both a legislator and a Deputy Minister, he has stressed the need for sustainable solutions to food insecurity among the youth, particularly in tertiary institutions.
The donation is seen as a direct response to growing concerns about student hardship amid the rising cost of living.
The University of Ghana launched the food bank initiative earlier this year to address food insecurity among students from low-income backgrounds.
Officials from the university have described the donation as timely and impactful.
“This support will go a long way to ensure that no student goes hungry while pursuing their education,” said Prof. Kyeremanten, expressing gratitude to Mr Dumelo for the thoughtful intervention.
