Health Minister announces significant boost in NHIS claims payments by 2026

Ghana’s healthcare sector is set for a major financial uplift as the government moves to significantly increase claims payments under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has announced.
According to the Minister, claims payments under the NHIS are projected to rise to 75 percent by 2026, a development he described as a “game-changer” for the country’s pursuit of universal health coverage.
Speaking at a press briefing, Mr. Akandoh attributed this projected improvement to the government's strategic decision to uncap the National Health Insurance Levy.
The policy shift, he explained, has unlocked vital financial resources, enabling broader access to healthcare services and strengthening the scheme’s capacity to deliver on its mandate.
“The removal of the cap on the National Health Insurance Levy is already yielding results,” the Minister stated.
“We are now better positioned to expand NHIS coverage, improve benefit packages, and ensure that healthcare providers are paid promptly.”
He revealed that NHIS allocations for claims payments have already seen a marked increase — from 56.2 percent in 2024 to a projected 65 percent in 2025 — with further growth expected the following year.
Mr. Akandoh emphasised that the steady upward trend demonstrates the government’s commitment to building a resilient health system that guarantees essential health services for all Ghanaians.
