Bomfa Chief reveals long-standing NDC membership, says politics has affected community development
The Chief of Bomfa in the Afigya Kwabre South District of the Ashanti Region, Nana Kwaku Twumasi, has publicly declared his long-standing membership of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Speaking at a public engagement organised by the District Chief Executive for Afigya Kwabre South at Bomfa, Nana Twumasi said although he has been a member of the NDC for many years, he was formerly a committed supporter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
According to the chief, he defected from the NPP during the administration of former President John Agyekum Kufuor.
Reflecting on his early political involvement during the administration of former President Jerry John Rawlings, Nana Twumasi said he was among young NPP supporters who participated in campaigns against the high cost of cement, including carrying bags of cement during demonstrations.
He also recounted an incident during an NPP campaign rally addressed by former President Kufuor in the Asawase Constituency, where he said three of his colleagues lost their lives after ending up in a gutter, while he survived the incident.
Despite his commitment to the NPP at the time, Nana Twumasi said he decided to leave the party after former President Kufuor acknowledged that governing the country was more difficult than he had expected and appealed to Ghanaians for patience.
According to the chief, the former president's remarks disappointed him and prompted his decision to join the NDC.
He said his decision to openly identify with the NDC was met with opposition within his community, adding that some residents protested against his enstoolment because of his political affiliation.
Nana Twumasi further alleged that Bomfa has been deprived of critical infrastructure and socio-economic development because of politics.
