Committee recommends upgrading 12 municipalities and creation of one metropolitan
The committee for the elevation of districts and municipalities presented its report to the Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs on Monday, 23 February 2026
The committee led by the National Chairman of the governing National Democratic Congress(NDC), Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has recommended the elevation of 12 municipalities and one metropolitan assembly, a move expected to enhance local governance and administrative efficiency.
The committee is recommending 12 upgrades and the creation of one metropolitan assembly to boost decentralisation.
The recommendation made to the Minister of Local Government and Religious and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, is aimed at strengthening decentralised governance.
This, he said, will allow the affected areas to access greater resources and exercise increased administrative powers in line with their upgraded status.
Details of the specific municipalities and the metropolitan assembly to be upgraded are expected to be released in due course. The recommendation now awaits approval from President John Dramani Mahama before implementation.
