Dr. Gideon Boako urges students to lead Ghana’s sustainability drive through innovation and research
The Member of Parliament for Tano North, Dr. Gideon Boako, has called on Ghanaian students to take an active role in driving the country’s sustainability agenda through research, innovation, and advocacy.
Dr. Boako made the call during a panel discussion at the 2025 International Sustainability Conference, organised by the KNUST College of Humanities and Social Sciences, which explored the theme of business innovation in sustainable development.
The MP, who is also a lecturer in Economics and Finance at the KNUST School of Business (currently on leave of absence to serve in Parliament), emphasised that Ghana’s youth have a crucial role in shaping an economy that balances economic progress with environmental preservation.
“As students, you are not just the future workforce; you are the future innovators, policymakers, and sustainability champions,” he told the audience.
Dr. Boako encouraged students to establish sustainability clubs, policy and research groups, and innovation hubs dedicated to solving pressing national challenges such as waste management, climate resilience, and social equity.
He further urged universities to develop platforms that support young researchers and entrepreneurs in testing and scaling green solutions that can be applied in communities and industries across the country.
“Through collaboration, creativity, and commitment, student groups can become incubators of real change,” he said.
Dr. Boako also stressed that sustainability extends beyond environmental protection to include fair labour practices, inclusive governance, and equitable access to resources.
“Our generation must be the one that proves that development and sustainability can go hand in hand — for Ghana, for Africa, and for the world,” he concluded.
