Group petitions NPP Council of Elders, calls for Justin Kodua Frimpong's resignation
A group calling itself Grassroots Alliance for Victory 2028 has petitioned the Council of Elders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), calling for the resignation of the party's General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong.
In a petition dated July 11, 2026, and addressed to the Chairman and Members of the Council of Elders at the NPP National Headquarters in Accra, the group said it was acting pursuant to Article 10 of the NPP Constitution, which mandates the Council to advise the National Council on matters of policy and other issues of importance to the party.
The petition references minutes of an emergency meeting issued by the Office of the General Secretary to Regional Representatives, Regional Officers and Constituency Elections Committees concerning preparations for the Constituency Executive Elections.
Welfare concerns
The group's first concern relates to a directive indicating that the party would provide "No T&T, No Food, No Drinks, No Snacks, No Water" for delegates during the elections, with delegates expected to "Arrive. Vote. Leave."
According to the petition, the directive is insensitive to more than 300,000 delegates, many of whom are Polling Station Executives and Electoral Area Coordinators from rural and deprived communities.
The group argued that requiring delegates to bear their own transport and welfare costs could result in low turnout, disenfranchisement and potential unrest, adding that the decision undermines the party's objective of conducting "peaceful, transparent and credible elections."
Financial concerns
The petition also questioned the explanation that "severe financial constraints" informed the withdrawal of welfare support.
The group stated that it is publicly known that Mr Frimpong had previously supported the payment of nomination fees for several aspirants across the country.
It questioned how the General Secretary could reportedly fund nominations for multiple aspirants while the party could not provide basic items such as water for delegates, saying the situation creates a perception of misplaced priorities and raises questions about the use of office and resources.
Impact on party unity
The group further argued that the decision risks alienating the party's grassroots base ahead of the 2028 general elections.
It said delegates who feel abandoned may become apathetic or vulnerable to manipulation, describing the situation as inconsistent with the unifying role expected of the General Secretary under Article 7 of the NPP Constitution.
Requests to the Council of Elders
The Grassroots Alliance for Victory 2028 is asking the Council of Elders to invite Mr Frimpong to explain the rationale behind the withdrawal of welfare support and what it describes as contradictions regarding the party's financial capacity.
The group also wants the Council to direct the National Executive Committee to review the decision and provide at least a token welfare package and water for delegates.
It further prayed that, should the General Secretary be unable to restore confidence in his leadership, the Council advise him to step down as General Secretary in the interest of party unity and credibility.
The petition, signed by Enoch Ayim, Convenor of the Grassroots Alliance for Victory 2028, said the group was acting "not out of malice but out of love for the NPP" and urged the Council of Elders to address the matter in a manner that protects the party's image, unity and future.
