The National Labour Commission (NLC) has called on the leadership of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), to rescind its intended decision to strike, as the commission makes efforts to address the issue of delayed payment of their outstanding Book and Research Allowances.

Speaking at a press conference at the University of Cape Coast, UTAG President, Dr Eric Opoku, said they were dismayed that government had not paid the 2017/2018 academic year Book and Research Allowances.

He said although the association has written letters to the Finance and Education Ministers reminding them on the issue, nothing positive has come out of it.

He, therefore, served notice that they will lay down their tools from Tuesday, 31 July 2018, until they are paid.

The NLC, however, in a response on Monday, 30 July 2018, ordered the Ministries involved to keep the Commission abreast of the matter to find an amicable solution to the request by UTAG.

“The National Labour Commission wishes to request the MoE and MoF to apprise the Commission of the issue within three days upon receipt of this letter,” Bernice A. Welbeck, Director of Administration and Human Resource at the NLC said in a letter dated Monday, 30 July 2018.

“With this intervention, the NLC wishes to appeal to UTAG to stay any or all intended action and allow the Commission to intervene,” the letter added.
