A conflict resolution expert, Austin Gamey, is calling for the constitution of a third-party mediator to investigate the stalemate between teacher unions at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) on the one hand, and the government on the other hand, over the reconstitution of the school’s Governing Council.

The Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU); and the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) are not in agreement over who should represent the two unions on the new council.

According to the government, having the same representatives of the two unions, who served on the dissolved council, on the new council will amount to those nominees being “judges in their court”.

TEWU and UTAG, on the other hand, insist they are maintaining their old representatives since they were duly elected for that and cannot be changed until elections are held again.

The students are expected to return to campus on Thursday, 8 November 2018 but the strike but the stalemate is frustrating their return.

Speaking to Class91.3FM on the matter, Mr. Gamey said an impartial third-party could thaw the ice between the two other parties.

The reconstitution efforts are being led by the Chancellor of the university, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
