Scores of irate youth at Adentan in the Greater Accra Region on Thursday afternoon burned tyres on the WASS Junction part of the Adentan-Madina highway and mounted a blockade against traffic after a female student of the West Africa Senior High School (WASS) got knocked down by a car, killing her instantly – the second such accident in less than a week.

The angry youth prevented vehicles from moving, causing a gridlock amidst severe chaos, which forced the police and fire officers to deploy to the area amidst firing of tear gas to disperse the crowd.

The youth threw stones and crude weapons at the fire and police officers who attempted clearing the road for traffic to flow.

Before Thursday’s accident, the youth had planned a protest vigil on Friday over the first accident.

Several fatalities have been recorded on that stretch of the highway due to the lack of overhead footbridges.
