Seven suspects have been arrested by the police in connection with the vandalisation of the governing New Patriotic Party office in the East Gonja municipality in the newly-created Savannah Region on Tuesday, 12 February 2019. Some irate youth, who protested against the naming of Damongo as the capital of the new region, set the party office and some party billboards and other properties ablaze. DSP Mohammed Yussif Tanko, the Northern Regional Police PRO confirmed the arrest to Class News’ regional correspondent Mohammed Gadafi and said the suspects were picked up in the early hours of Wednesday, 13 February 2019 at Salaga upon intelligence, and are in police custody to assist with further investigations. "The suspects were quickly identified and seven of them have been subsequently arrested", he stated. There were also attempts by the irate youth to burn some government facilities including the official residence of the Municipal Chief Executive but DSP Tanko said the police moved in quickly and succeeded in preventing the burning down of the District Assembly and the MCE's bungalow. DSP Tanko noted that the situation has been brought under control and a police reinforcement team has been sent to Salaga from Tamale to help maintain law and order. He urged the people of Salaga to remain calm and not to take the law into their hands, and further admonished them to help in identifying more suspects. He warned that any person found disturbing the peace will be dealt with. Source: Ghana/ClassFMonline.com/91.3FM/Mohammed Gadafi/Northern Region
