The management of the Ho Technical University in the Volta Region has denied reports suggesting that the appointment of its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ben Quarshie Honyenuga, has been revoked by the education ministry.

Media reports of the revocation of Professor Honyenuga’s appointment claimed his removal was due to uncertainty surrounding his doctorate degree – a claim that is being investigated.

Two faculty members of the university, Dr Cephas Bosrotsi and Dr Richard Akplotsyi, called for a probe into the authenticity of Professor Honyenuga’s doctorate degree.

Explaining the reasons for their petition to Class News, Dr Akplotsyi said: “It was reported consistently in 2007, 2008 and 2009 that he was pursuing a PhD programme at KNUST in management, so, we became interested, meaning that by 2009, 2010 we expected to see a new qualification against his name but in 2010 to our surprise, we realised Honyenuga was enrolled again to study PhD in management at Maastricht School of Management in The Netherlands.

“So, I asked myself and my friends: ‘Is Maastricht University now using KNUST PhD as an entry point?’ Then we probed further and then he brought a PhD from the Open University that he has acquired a PhD, so, we began to ask questions that what became of his PhD at KNUST?”

Meanwhile, a press release signed by the Registrar of the Ho Technical University, said: “We wish to state for the information of the University Community, alumni and the general public that neither the Council nor the Management of Ho Technical University has been served notice of the revocation of the appointment of a Vice-Chancellor for the university.”

The release added that: “A letter dated December 13, 2018, to the university and signed by the Ag. Executive Secretary of the National Accreditation Board, on the subject: ‘Evaluation of Certificate, Ben Quarshie Honyenuga’, stated as follows: ‘This is to certify that the Doctor of Philosophy awarded to Ben Honyenuga by Open University of The Netherlands, is comparable to a Doctorate (PhD) in the relevant subject area, awarded by a recognised tertiary institution in Ghana'”.
