The Northern Regional Secretariat of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has said the party will not shield or offer refuge to any of its members who may be found guilty of destroying public property in the Salaga South constituency of the newly-created Savannah Region.

The party warned that no member who is apprehended in connection with the arson should dare seek asylum from the party.

Some youth in the East Gonja municipality of the Savannah Region went on the rampage on Tuesday, 12 February 2019 a few hours after President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo named Damongo as the capital for the region.

The irate youth, in protesting the President’s decision, torched the constituency office of the NPP and were prevented by the police in their attempt to attack the residence of the Municipal Chief Executive.

Seven suspects were subsequently arrested on Wednesday dawn following intelligence gathered by the police.

The NPP’s Northern Regional Secretary, Mr Sule Sambian condemned the conduct of the youth and assured the police of the party’s support to investigate the matter.

Speaking to Class News, he said: “It must be underscored that the exercise of the executive powers of the state is vested in the president for and on behalf of the people of Ghana. The creation of regions and deciding on their capital towns is the exercise of that executive power. You cannot question the executive powers of the president by violent or unlawful means. You cannot question executive acts by resorting to arson. No decent practitioner or adherent of democracy will condone this. Indeed, resorting to crime and violence as a way of ventilating our grievances is never conducive to the agenda of the NPP in this region.”

He added: “To destroy a party office is extremely unfortunate”.
