The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has invited Mugabe Maase, a journalist with Accra-based Radio XYZ, to assist with investigations into claims of death threats on the life of investigative journalist Manasseh Azure Awuni.

A letter to the management of XYZ Media stated that: “There is a report of a threat of death on the life of Joy FM journalist Mr Manasseh Azure Awuni. This threat happened in the wake of the airing of the documentary titled ‘MILITIA IN THE HEART OF THE NATION’ on DE-EYE GROUP’ or Joy TV on 7th March 2019.

“In view of the above, it would be appreciated if you could release Mr Mugabe Maase to confer with the undersigned on Tuesday, 12 March 2019, at 4 p.m. We would also be grateful if Mr Maase could submit any information that he may have to assist the police to avert any plan or whatever threat on the life of Mr Manasseh Azure Awuni.”

Manasseh’s 20-minute investigative documentary alleged that the government was sponsoring and training a militia group called De-Eye at the Christianborg Castle in Osu, Accra, the former seat of government.
