A planned demonstration by students of the University of Education, Winneba to demand the reinstatement of some dismissed lecturers of the school turned chaotic on Thursday, 14 March 2019.

The situation took a violent twist when police officers fired warning shots and teargas at the demonstrators, which according to reports, have led to, at least, 10 people sustaining varied degrees of injuries.

According to an eyewitness, personnel from the Formed Police Unit were called in as reinforcement to control the students who hurled stones at the officers and also destroyed billboards and some other school property.

The action of the police enraged the students who massed up around the university’s administration to protest against the manner in which the police handled the situation.

The student body and alumni of UEW served notice the demonstration against the Vice-Chancellor, Rev Father Prof Afful-Broni for the rate at which he is dismissing lecturers.

Thursday’s demonstration was the third consecutive march dubbed: ‘Operation bring back our lecturers’, which began on Monday, 11 March 2019.

Prof Afful-Broni has allegedly sacked 12 lecturers since he was sworn in as V-C of the university by President Akufo-Addo in 2018.

The latest dismissals affected the school’s UTAG chapter president, Dr Frimpong Kaakyire Duku, as well as Professor Ephraim Avea Nsoh and Prof Sarpong.

The V-C cited misconduct and insubordination among other reasons, for his action but the lecturers have denied any wrongdoing.
