Some students of the Chereponi Technical Senior High School have asked the authorities of the school to allow them to go home.

The students’ demand follows the violence that broke out in the area over the weekend.

The students, who are believed to be mostly non-Chokosis, massed up at the Chereponi district police station and insisted their parents had called them to come home due to the communal violence.

The PRO of the Northern regional police command, DSP Mohammed Yussif Tanko, told Class news that the protest by the students is against the advice of security.

Mr Tanko explained that the District Security Council and the Ghana Education Service District Directorate had a meeting and resolved not to close down the school because there was adequate security protection.

He stated: "The school authorities were also advised to continue their normal operations because the security [agencies] were going to provide the necessary protection."

A reinforcement team was deployed from the national capital, Accra, to the area and this has improved the security situation on the ground.

DSP Tanko disclosed that 22 communities have been affected since the violence started last weekend. He stated: "Eleven of the affected communities are for the Chokosis and the other eleven areas are for the Konkombas. This indicates that there is competition between the two feuding factions to equalise the burning and the destructions that are ongoing."

The police and the military, he said, are employing strategic measures to control the crisis.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has revealed that over 1,800 people have been displaced but indicated that they cannot quantify the level of destruction that has been caused for now.
