A picture of the Earth in ‘perfect balance’ has been captured during the recent vernal equinox. On March 20, day and night across the planet was equal at all latitudes and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) captured this stunning image of the planet.

The equinox occurs twice a year, in March and in September. It heralds the changing seasons and, last week, marked the official astronomical start of spring. The equinox (which is Latin for ‘equal night’) happens when Earth’s axis is tilted neither toward nor away from the sun. During an equinox, the sun is directly over the equator at noon.

Science fans may be fascinated to learn that on the spring equinox, due to light refraction, the sun will remain visible above the horizon even after it has sunk down below Earth. And it will appear to rise in the morning before it has come up over the horizon. Many people regard March 20 as the start of spring, but the equinox can fall between the 19 and 21 of that month.
