Ghanaian football legend, Reverend Osei Kofi, has said the Ghana Black Stars will miss the 2019 Afcon trophy.

He based his comments on unfulfilled promises made to previous Afcon players who won trophy several decades ago.

Ghana, who have won the Afcon for four times, will be heading to Egypt with the aim of breaking their 37-year trophy drought.

Speaking to Class 91.3FM, Reverend Osei Kofi expressed pessimism that the Black Stars can bring the trophy home a fifth time after the tournament.

“Do you know Benfica? One of their coaches won the European Cup for them. They didn’t pay him and sacked him. He [Bela Guttman] cursed them that they will win the cup after a hundred years. They have gone to fifteen finals. They have not been able to win. The man is dead. They have gone to the cemetery to talk to him spiritually. Things are not going on well,” he explained.

He continued: “In Ghana, we haven’t cursed anyone. I’m a pastor, too, and I know. I visited another pastor and he told me, ‘Osei, do you know your group [1963 and 1965 Afcon winning team] have said something which is working against Ghana? The promises that Ghana promised you. Look at my age. I couldn’t put up a house because I used everything to win the Afcon for Ghana, and you refused to give it to me. What do you think will happen?’”

However, Rev. Osei Kofi asserted that the Black Stars will reach greater heights in the future if the current Black Meteors team is managed properly.

“Though we have qualified for this tournament, let’s go and see what we can do but the next generation from the Under 23, if we keep them together, not using their political authority to bring in their family members, then things will start being proper,” he noted.
