The Ministry of Education (MoE) has refuted an allegation that the minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has given a relative of his, a contract for the procurement of new school uniforms for Junior High School pupils.

Social media was awash with a story that claim that Dr Prempeh had awarded a purported $350 million contract to his relative following the launch of new school uniform for JHSs by the Ghana Education Service (GES).

However, a statement signed by the Deputy Communication Director at the Ministry of Education, Kwasi Obeng-Fosu, which was released on Friday, 12 April 2019, said: “The Minister wishes to state emphatically for the avoidance of doubt that the story is false, without merit and the figment of someone’s imagination, designed to cause disaffection towards him”.

The release added that the false reports referred to the “so-called relative, said to be Ebenezer Opoku Prempeh” at various points as the minister’s brother, son and nephew but the minister emphasises “that he has no relative by that name”.

Making the announcement at a press conference in Accra on Thursday, 11 April 2019, the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Prof Kwasi Opoku Amankwa said the new uniform will differentiate JHS pupils from basic school pupils.

The new uniforms, he noted, will come with a revised curriculum.
